Mon 10th Dec 2001 : Partnership Strengthens Business Opportunities
Every week dozens of local businesses are joining a successful South Yorkshire ‘Buy Local’ Partnership initiative, which is helping to promote their products and services, and ‘net’ valuable new contracts, on a free Internet based Electronic Bulletin board.

Les Tattershall, a member of the Rotherham Chamber Manufacturers Group, one of the organisations supporting the initiative, said: “The scheme is based on a model set up by North East Lincolnshire Council, and is open to businesses and organisations across Lincolnshire and South Yorkshire. Once registered, they can quickly and easily log on to the Buy Local website www.buy-local.co.uk ."

An example of the success of the scheme is Rotherham-based sign company Pryorsign, whose general manager, Phil Baxter said: “Thanks to ‘Buy Local’, we found out, and successfully tendered for a substantial contract to supply a range of innovative internal and external signs for Magna, the science adventure centre. These included 3 giant signs, each measuring 6 metres, which were placed on the side of the building, with the help of cranes.

“As a local company, we are confident our skilled workforce can give competitors from other areas of the country a run for their money, and we plan to be very active on the ‘Buy Local’ electronic bulletin board.”

Geoff Armitage, REACT's Operations Manager, which actively supports the initiative, said: “Businesses that do not have the technology in place to access the Internet are not excluded from becoming involved as we can help them to access grants and support to get them online.”
